An IT system adapted to users
The scheme whereby TCO certifies computer displays is one example of how Information Technology users can, with the aid of trade union organisations, influence the development of their own IT equipment. If IT is to become an effective support for the principle of sustainable development, it is also necessary that the IT systems themselves and their programs shall be user-adapted.
UsersAward is a generic name for a project along these lines, that was initiated in 1998 by LO (the Swedish Confederation of Trade Unions). It consists of a number of associated projects, user activities and a network of researchers, user companies and suppliers.
User-adaptation of systems and programmes means, among other things, that they:
  • give users an overview of the task and make them feel a part of it
  • enable participation in the planning procedure
  • have analytical and follow-up tools that reinforce the learning process that forms part of the work
  • encourage communication, both within and external to the task
  • invite the testing of new proposals and ideas, such as simulation
  • can easily be adapted to meet the needs of the task
  • are fast, easily accessible and also adapted to suit work on the move
